Inset Mapper: Ένα λογισμικό για το πρόβλημα της «Χωρικής Ασυνέχειας του Γεωγραφικού Χώρου»

ABSTRACT: Cartography often is dealing with problems that confront the necessity of designing cartographic software tools. More specific Island cartography deals with special cartographic problems confronted in the portrayal of island regions. One of the most serious problems faced by mapmakers is that of the “Land Discontinuity Problem” which arises when cartographers want to represent island regions. In this case the most efficient cartographic solution is the creation of an inset map. This paper presents and analyses the «Land Discontinuity» special cartographic problem and showcases the solution to tackle this problem with the use of inset maps. The theoretical background and the grouping of the appropriate cartographic rules that should be followed in insetting are also presented as they are embedded into the Inset Mapper (IM) software tool. Examples in cartographic datasets are illustrated in this paper showing the functionality of the IM software tool as well. Finally all the advantages of the IM use in the cartographic procedure are discussed.
